Powerful Personal Prayer: Ten Keys to a Dynamic Prayer Life
When do You Pray?
Published: 4/13/10
What time of day is best for meditation, Bible reading, and prayer?
The short answer is, of course, whenever we can be alone with the Lord; morning, noon, or night, it doesn't matter, as long as we set time aside to commune and fellowship with him.
At different periods of my life, I have enjoyed personal prayer at various times of the day.
- At the end of the day. When I was in school, I found the end of the day was a good time for me to spend a few minutes in Bible study and prayer. I could let the day slip away and rest in the presence of the Lord just before I lay down to sleep. God says he wants us to sleep well and being surrounded by his sweet peace is a great way to enter into undistured slumber. See scriptures on sleep at right.
- In the middle of the night. After my children arrived, my days were full of nearly constant demands. I found myself taking the time during those night feedings to pray over my children. This evolved into serious middle of the night prayer. In the quiet of the night, after the baby was asleep again, I could talk to God about all the things on my mind. Time seems to stand still at this hour, and I enjoyed a sweet communion during those nights. I continued this practice for some time after the night feedings stopped. Even now, when there is something particular bothering me, I will get up at two or three and pray about it for awhile. It always helps. If you've never tried this, I urge you to experiement with middle of the night prayer, you may become addicted.
- Early in the morning. There is something to be said for starting out the day in communion with God. Our spirit is more receptive because we are naturally in a fasting state. The world is fresh and we are able to focus on hearing God's voice through the scriptures we read and time spent in meditation. Yes, I believe in meditation. After I've read a verse or passage, I close my eyes and ask the Lord to reveal something of the truth of that scripture to me. Then, I sit quietly and reflect on what I have just read. More often that not, when I do this, I see something in the verse I have never seen before. It is tremendously exciting and encouraging when this happens. Give this a try and see what happens.
